Serving the Central Valley Since 1987
About This Service
A pool and spa combination extends the season and the usefulness of your backyard. In Modesto’s climate — hot summers and mild but cool winters — a heated spa integrated into a custom pool design means the backyard becomes a year-round destination rather than a warm-weather-only amenity.
At Ultimate Pools by Fetter, we design and build integrated pool and spa combinations as a single cohesive feature — not a pool with a hot tub placed next to it. The spa is designed as part of the overall pool concept, sharing structural elements, complementing the pool’s shape and aesthetic, and creating the kind of finished backyard that looks like it was always meant to be there.
Design Options
01
The spa is elevated above the pool with a spillway or cascade flowing into the pool below. This creates visual interest, the soothing sound of moving water, and a natural connection between the two features. Particularly effective on smaller yards because the visual complexity doesn’t require additional square footage.
02
The spa is incorporated as an alcove or extended bay of the pool itself, at the same level but separated by a raised bond beam or partial wall. This approach tends toward a cleaner, more modern aesthetic and works well with geometric pool designs where a unified look is the priority.
03
A raised spa — often clad in tile or stone — becomes an architectural focal point of the outdoor space, positioned at the end of the pool or adjacent to it. These designs work well when there’s a view to frame or when the overall outdoor living concept calls for a more dramatic, resort-style statement.
Year-Round Living
Modesto’s summers are hot enough that a pool alone handles warm months comfortably. But from October through March, evening temperatures drop enough that a heated spa dramatically extends how often the backyard gets used. Many of our clients tell us the spa ends up being used more consistently year-round than the pool — particularly for couples and adults who want a relaxing outdoor space on a cool evening.
We size spa heaters for efficient performance in Central Valley conditions and design equipment systems that allow the spa to heat quickly and independently while the pool holds its temperature with minimal energy use.
Heat the spa to temperature without heating the entire pool.
Pool and spa share filtration and circulation — less equipment, lower cost.
Properly sized heaters bring a spa to temperature in 30–60 minutes.
Spa and pool designed together — never an afterthought.
Built for Central Valley Conditions
Integrated pool and spa designs place more load on the surrounding soil than a pool alone — particularly raised spa designs that include significant elevated masonry. Our site assessment evaluates bearing capacity and soil stability before structural design is finalized.
The Central Valley’s expansive clay soils and variable drainage conditions require that the shared structural system between pool and spa is engineered for the specific ground conditions on your property — not assumed to be adequate based on a standard spec.
